Reading and Use of English

Use of English consists of texts with vocabulary and grammar tasks. Students are expected to understand different types of texts like magazines and newspapers, fiction, short stories and internet articles.

The reading part consists of a range of texts and tasks that test students' reading ability. It involves answering multiple-choice questions about a text, with candidates expected to be able to read a text for detail, opinion, tone, purpose, main idea, implication and attitude.

Listening

Listening is all about sharpening your ability to follow and understand a variety of spoken materials. From interviews and radio broadcasts to presentations, lectures, and everyday conversations, this skill is essential for real-world communication. The exercises often involve matching, whether it’s pairing pictures with texts, identifying speakers, or connecting paragraphs to the right authors. You'll develop a keen ear for accents and pronunciations, helping you feel more confident in any English-speaking environment.

Speaking

The Speaking test is taken face to face, with two candidates and two examiners. It tests your use of English with tasks that show how well you can control your grammar and vocabulary.

At Cambridge English App, we help students get ready for the Speaking test at levels B1, B2, C1, and C2 with tons of practice. You’ll find engaging activities like Bubbles Discussion, Long Turn, and Images Discussion that mirror real exam tasks and boost your fluency and confidence.

Writing

The Writing test assesses your ability to produce clear, well-structured texts in English. You’ll complete tasks that may include emails, essays, reports, articles, letters or reviews. This part of the exam tests how well you can organise your ideas, use appropriate vocabulary, and apply correct grammar in real-life writing situations.

English Grammar in Use

English grammar is the set of structural rules of the English language. This includes the structure of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and whole texts. In other words, grammar is the structure and system of a language usually considered to consist of syntax and morphology.

Vocabulary

English vocabulary is the full set of words, including their basic forms, modified forms, and set phrases like idioms, that are used as the primary tools for communicating meaning clearly in the language.

Phrasal Verbs

A phrasal verb is a phrase that’s made up of a verb and another word or two, usually a preposition but sometimes an adverb. Phrasal verbs open up a whole new world of possibilities for speaking English. They are phrases that give verbs completely different meanings. Phrasal verbs are expected to show up during the B2, C1 and C2 examinations.

Idioms

An idiom is a common word or phrase with a culturally understood meaning that differs from what its composite words' denotations would suggest; i.e. the words together have a meaning that is different from the dictionary definitions of the individual words. Idioms are expected to show up during the B2, C1 and C2 examinations.

Collocations

A collocation is two or more words that often go together. These combinations just sound "right" to native English speakers, who use them all the time. On the other hand, other combinations may be unnatural and just sound "wrong". Collocations are expected to show up during the B2, C1 and C2 examinations.
